Central Cairns is compact and easy to explore on foot. Most attractions, shops, and restaurants are close together around the Esplanade and city centre, where taxis, rideshares, and bus stops are easy to find.

Public buses, operated by Sunbus (now part of Kinetic), connect the city with nearby suburbs at reasonable fares. Services run less frequently at night and on weekends, so travellers should check timetables in advance, especially for late trips.

Rideshare services such as Uber and DiDi operate in Cairns and are often a convenient alternative to taxis, though wait times can be longer late at night or outside the city centre. Car hire is also widely available for those wanting to explore further afield, such as the beaches or hinterland.

Boat trips and cruises remain a popular way to experience the region, particularly for visiting the Great Barrier Reef or enjoying scenic coastal tours.
