Curacao Travel Guide
Curaçao is a beautiful and largely flat island, about 40 miles (64 km) in length. The southern coastline is dotted with scenic bays, sandy beaches, and secluded coves, while the northern shore is more rugged, shaped by strong winds and crashing surf.
The best beaches are found along the southwest coast, where calm, crystal-clear waters create a tropical paradise for divers, snorkellers, and swimmers. Toward the east are larger natural harbours, including the main port area and Willemstad, the island's historic capital.
Curaçao is an ideal destination for underwater enthusiasts. Excellent visibility, warm waters, well-preserved reefs, and a wide range of dive and snorkel sites make it one of the Caribbean's top diving locations.
On land, visitors can explore a variety of natural and cultural attractions. The Hato Caves offer guided tours through impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations. Christoffel Park, home to Mount Christoffel (the island's highest point) features exotic flora, native wildlife such as the blue iguana, and panoramic hiking trails. Nearby, Shete Boka National Park showcases dramatic limestone coves where Atlantic waves crash into sea-carved inlets.
Willemstad has been a centre of international trade for centuries, and its multicultural heritage is reflected in its vibrant architecture and diverse population. The historic districts of Punda and Otrobanda are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, featuring charming streets lined with Dutch colonial buildings now housing restaurants, museums, shops and hotels.
Many of these buildings have been adapted for the island's warm climate, with Caribbean-style shutters, verandas, and cheerful pastel facades that enhance their historical charm.
Whether visitors spend their days relaxing in the sun or enjoying the island's many land and sea activities, Curaçao offers a welcoming atmosphere. As the sun sets, locals and visitors alike gather in seaside bars, where happy hour often marks the start of an unforgettable evening.
