Yerevan Travel Guide

With the snow-capped Caucasus Mountains in the distance, Yerevan is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, founded in 782 BCE. Often called the 'Pink City' because of the rose-coloured tuff stone used in its buildings, Yerevan combines ancient history with Soviet-era planning and a lively modern culture.

Most visitors stay in the city centre, where wide boulevards, neoclassical buildings, and sidewalk cafes create a relaxed, European-style atmosphere. A highlight is the Singing Fountains in Republic Square, where water, coloured lights and music come together in nightly performances during the warmer months. The Cascade Complex is another popular spot, offering outdoor art, concerts and panoramic views of Mount Ararat and the city below.

Yerevan's metro is clean, affordable and worth riding just to see its blend of Armenian and Soviet design, though it has limited coverage. The city's vibrant cafe culture keeps sidewalks buzzing late into the evening, and traditional taverns (pandoks) serve khorovats and homemade spirits such as oghee. Visitors can also sample locally produced brandy with a tour of the historic Ararat Brandy Factory.

Smoking is now banned in most indoor public spaces, though enforcement can vary. The best time to visit is spring or early autumn, when the weather is mild and the city is at its liveliest.
