Hobart Travel Guide
Tucked between Mount Wellington and the River Derwent, about 12 miles (20km) from the river mouth, Hobart is the charming capital of Tasmania and home to one of the world's most secure deep-water harbours. Established in 1804, the city is steeped in colonial history and makes an ideal base for exploring the island.
The historic district of Battery Point is filled with colonial cottages, tearooms, antique shops, restaurants, and pubs. Nearby, the Narryna Heritage Museum brings 19th-century pioneer life to life, while the Maritime Museum of Tasmania celebrates the city's seafaring heritage.
Hobart also has green spaces such as the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, with English-style plantings and a Japanese garden featuring a miniature Mount Fuji. Visitors can enjoy steam train rides, tours of a former women's prison, the Cascade Brewery, gaming at Wrest Point Casino, harbour cruises, or sampling treats at Island Produce Tasmania. A short drive up Mount Wellington provides stunning panoramic views of the city and surrounding wilderness.
